SANJAY GHODAWAT INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a non-profit educational foundation based in Switzerland, offers the Diploma Programme for pupils in the final two years of secondary school.

Recognized as the leader in international education, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme fosters the knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable students to excel in university. Through the IB Diploma Programme, students gain rigorous and balanced academic preparation, an ability to draw on knowledge and understanding of various cultures and histories, and the experience of learning how to think critically and apply what they have learned in different contexts and across disciplines. The IB Diploma Programme’s challenging curriculum educates the student as whole, developing the capacity for inquiry, research and problem solving as well as essential skills for communication and collaboration.

Ultimately, the broad goal of the Diploma Programme is to provide students with the values and opportunities that will enable them to develop sound judgment, to make wise choices and respect others in the global community.

IBDP programme ideally prepares the students for university and encourages them to:

  • Ask challenging questions,
  • Develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture,
  • Become active, compassionate and lifelong learners,
  • Develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures.

The Program Model

The Diploma Programme (DP) provides a challenging, internationally focused, broad and balanced educational experience for students aged 16 to 19. Students are required to study six subjects and a core concurrently over two years. The programme is designed to equip students with the basic academic skills needed for university education and their chosen profession. Additionally, the programme supports the development of the values and life skills needed to live a fulfilled and purposeful life.

A distinguishing characteristic of the DP is a concern with the whole educational experience of each student. The curriculum framework (see the IBDP model), and the supporting structures and principles, are designed to ensure that each student is necessarily exposed to a broad and balanced curriculum. The learner profile and the core are positioned at the centre of the programme, reflecting the priority given to affective disposition as well as cognitive development, and a concern with developing competent and active citizens as well as subject specialists. The core requirements of theory of knowledge (TOK), the extended essay and creativity, activity, service (CAS) broaden the educational experience and challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding in real-life contexts.

Why IBDP is ideal preparation for university?

  • It increases academic opportunity
  • It encourages critical thinking
  • It encourages depth of learning
  • It encourages you to become a confident and independent learner
  • It’s an international qualification
  • Subjects are not taught in isolation
  • Graduates are globally minded

IB DP students are expected to complete the expectation in the   core subjects – CAS, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.

CAS Creativity – Arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking. Activity – Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the IB Diploma Programme. Service – An unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student.   TOK TOK plays a special role in the Diploma Programme by providing an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know. The fundamental question of TOK is “how do we know that?” Students are encouraged to think about how knowledge is arrived at in different disciplines, what the disciplines have in common and the differences. Extended Essay An extended essay (approximate 4,000 words) offers the opportunity for IBDP students to investigate a topic of special interest related to one of the student’s six Diploma Programme (DP) subjects/disciplines. Both types of extended essay (single-disciplinary and interdisciplinary essays) are intended to promote high-level research and writing skills, intellectual discovery and creativity expected at university.
