Career Guidance and Counselling is a comprehensive, developmental program designed to assist students in making and implementing informed educational choices. We cherish the dream of every student and appreciate the passion and zeal they possess to pursue it. We offer comprehensive college guidance programs to lead them in the right path.

SGIS offers a comprehensive college guidance programs scheduled throughout the year. We strongly believe that College admission is not a prize to be won rather it is match to be made. Toward this end, we actively assist students as they research colleges, explore careers and begin to make decisions about where they would like their lives to head after graduating from SGIS. As a team, we constantly train, counsel and guide students to maximize university preferences; succeed in achieving their best; meet the pre-requisites and criteria for attaining admission into their dream university. Thus, we enable our students to articulate their strengths and manifest their skill sets in the appropriate forums.

There are two stages in the process of career guidance and Counselling:

a)      Career Orientation

b)      Career Development

Objectives of Career Orientation and Career Development –

·     To gain an understanding of students’ interests, abilities, aptitudes and strengths

·     To develop an individual inventory of valuable career development foundation skills

·     To gain valuable career information and related options and opportunities

·     To develop a tentative career and educational plan relevant to student interests & abilities. It helps students to be competitive in terms of Educational background, enhancement of skills, work experience, environment, ability and willingness to sell oneself, in competitive world.

Good career planning and management therefore plays a critical role in preparing oneself for the world of work by equipping ourselves with the skills to remain relevant in the global economy and lead purposeful lives. Research has shown that career planning programmes can positively impact academic performance leading to optimal education and career decisions.

Interest Assessment: Getting to Know Yourself

The first step in the process of Career and Academic Planning starts with

‘Understanding Oneself’. This is enabled through the various online tests.

–      We will be guiding students in every grade with the respective assessment that they need to take

–      These assessments will provide an insight to the students on the various career streams that is most applicable to them

Other resources to assess own self are:

o        Teachers

o        Family and Friends

Based on the above, students are able to select subjects for their IB curriculum.

Guides students to explore the world of careers

Internships: We encourage students to participate in internship programmes in India and abroad to get an in-depth understanding of the chosen careers. Deeper insight into our Summer Internship program is provided in this handbook

Career Presentations: We organize guest lectures of various career speakers who share their experience and stories and cover topics that interest students in terms of their career planning

University Fairs/Career Days: We organize University fairs and exhibitions for students and parents, of Universities in India and abroad; to get a better understanding of the different career options and the viable solutions. It gives students a broader perspective, gets them introduced to different Universities, increases their awareness levels and helps them assess all the options to make a completely informed decision.

Summer Schools: We also encourage our students to attend summer schools to widen their scope and understanding of the subjects they intend to specialize in.

Community Action and Service: We also have our students doing volunteering work as a part of their Community Action and service initiative. These activities give a student a broader perspective towards life which helps them further understand their own selves, their personality types and thus strengthens their career decisions.

Resume Writing and interviewing skills: We help students with resume writing; writing of personal statements and personal interviews as the case may be which help them in their overall confidence levels and make them realize their improvement areas. Resume Writing, writing of covering letters is very important in the process of application to Universities. Facing the interview is another important criterion in the application process.

In the online Career Management portal as well, the student can update his/her resume. Every month he can keep adding to his resume based on the extra-curricular activities that he has been performing.

Responsibility of the Career Counselling Department

Career Counselling Department are facilitators at every stage in the process of Career Management.

·     Help students create their career profiles on CIALFO and kick-start the process of career management.

·     Help students with researching the most appropriate university in terms of their career aspirations, interest, and personality type and develop a balanced and realistic list of universities after consulting parents and students together.

·     Provide information about the most appropriate subject to be selected for a particular course.

·     Offers counsel and advice through the university decision making process.

·     Offers Career related information to students and parents from time to time.

·     Presents school recommendations, school profile and transcripts to colleges and universities.

·     Helps students with providing the requisite documents, transcripts, recommendation letters to the various Universities they wish to study in, thus completing their application process.

·     Advises on personal statements and essays. Handholds students with respect to writing effective resumes.
